Archive welcome THE REVENGE and EMMA to Liverpool for what is the first of a great line of parties in 2010.

The Revenge began producing in his early teenage years, making a skewed blend of electronic music using a couple of his dad’s old drum machines and a sampler. Influenced by his parents collection of rock, soul and funk aswell as eighties daytime radio and the burgeoning rave scene, he began the process of dissecting and re-imagining the music.

Productions for his own labels Instruments Of Rapture, Five20East and his DJ edits for L.E.S.S. Productions have had across-the-board support from scene heavyweights including Danny Krivit, Jimpster, Radio Slave, Prins Thomas, Fabrice Lig, Todd Terje, The Unabombers, Karizma, SWAG, Dan Ghenacia, Gilles Peterson, Ashley Beedle, Domu, Kissy Sellout, Joe Claussell, Stuart Patterson, Atjazz, Bill Brewster, Phil Asher, Tim Sweeney and more.

Emma has shared booths with some of her heroes, such as Green Velvet, Andrew Weatherall, Etienne De Crecy, Justin Robertson, Stacey Pullen, Cassius and The Idjut Boys. She has played across the UK and beyond, including Fabric, The End, Lowlife & The Warehouse Project. Several trips to New York took in sets at Manhattan hotspot APT and the Music Gallery. Russia and Croatia followed, with peak-time slots at both the Garden Festival and the Electric Elephant last year, returning in 2010.

Her vinyl-only sets traverse the sublime across the deeper end of the house, disco and techno spectrums, always crafted around a solid 4/4 heartbeat.

Supporting The Revenge and Emma will be the Archive residents, Andy Mac and Cosmic Boogie. The Revenge, being the nice chap that he is, took some time out to answer questions for us ahead of his trip to Liverpool…

2009 – the year of The Revenge? Or have you got more up your sleeve for this year…

“I’ve got a very long sleeve so there’s more to come.”

What was the biggest part of last year for you?

“The whole year was a bit of a blur to be honest – it’s been a rollercoaster so far.”

Do you think the disco remergance and the deep house scene are starting to knit together?

“Disco is the foundation of House + Techno so all have featured in my sets over the years. I’ve never really made a distinction – good music is good music.”

And who are the people to watch, house or disco, in 2010?

“I’ll put my money on Deep Space Orchestra this year + my mate Ali who does the OOFT stuff with me – he’s been knocking out some heavy jams.”

6th Borough Project has arguably been as big as the solo production of the revenge in the last 12 months – you plan to keep the two different projects rolling?

“6th Borough Project is a collab with Craig Smith and we’ve worked together for 10 years so there’s no plans to stop. It’s too much fun!”

And will we ever see a 6th Boro live show maybe?

“No live show planned – we’re gonna do a few one-off DJ appearances together this year doing longer sets (4/5 hours).”

Edits, reworks, re-versions eh? Not needed, overbloated scene, and all that. Discuss.

“Edits have been around for longer than I’ve been alive and will always be part of this scene. My view has always been that It’s a way for DJs to re-interpret tracks they love and fit them into their sets – not a way to make money.”

Why does scotland have such strong ties with disco and great house music? The list is endless…

“We’ve got hidden heroes like Harri, Craig Smith, Funky Transport, Barry Reeves, Mash up here who have been the foundation of scenes in different cities and who have nurtured upcoming talent. We’ve also got internationally recognised clubs and shops like the Sub Club, Pressure, Rub-A-Dub records who all have a strong connection with Chicago + Detroit.”

Finally, with digital djing systems all the rage at the moment, what are your favourite crisps?

“Has to be spring onion Tudor … think they stopped making them in the 1980’s though so I’d avoid opening a bag if you see them.”

So there you go – The Revenge – great producer, fantastic DJ, absolutely rubbish taste in crisps. If that’s not all good enough for you, then here are 4 latest mixes from everyone involved. Enjoy…

RBMA: Maurice Fulton

YouTube Preview Image

Following on with the cut down versions of the amazing Red Bull Music Academy videos for the countdown to the event kicking off in London this year, here is the American/Sheffield disco house legend that is Maurice Fulton. We had him up to play archive last year and he was amazing, as ever. In this video you see the mans thought process laid out on the table as he lays down a groove. Useful, and fascinating.

The academy kicks off in February, and so far the pick of the events is this bad boy. How good does that sound?

I wish I could skate.

Red Bull Music Academy

Not very often do I post about other events on here, things usually get enough coverage on the web to last a lifetime. However, I think an exception can be made with The Red Bull Music Academy. This year the event takes place in London between the 7th of Feb and the 12th of March, and I would assume that just like everyone else reading this, I am kicking myself for not even trying to apply for it.

Over the next few weeks im going to link up to a series of shortened interviews from the many legends who have graced the academy in the past, all with a disco edge (of course), and also some cool radio shows and event news…

For now, take it away DJ Harvey…

Archive back for boxing night…

It might not be a “tradition” just yet, as its only the second year – but im pretty sure that it is destined to become one. Boxing Night in Liverpool is a big night out for the locals, and boxing night in Liverpool is now a big night for Archive. Were back again on the 26th with a FREE party. You wont get that anywhere else in town, and were doing it to setup what promises to be a great year of archive parties in 2010.

El Diablos top the bill – the best night out in Manchester if your musical tastes are anyway inclined towards disco, and one of the best dj’s I know – Neil Scott – will be representing the crew. This time we miss regular cohort Scott McGill as he will be sunning himself in the lakes, but we have asked Jo Joy to come in and spin for us instead.

Add in to the mix myself and Andy Mac (the other archive residents) and a format that means no DJ will play for set hours like usual (instead, we will constantly be on rotation all night) and you get the idea – its a house party. I usually write here that if you want to be on the paying guestlist, or need a ticket you should get hold of me as soon as possible – but I don’t need to this time. Its free. Just come down and enjoy.

Guest Mix 15 – Jess Gascgoine

Jess Funk

This is the best mix I have heard on Soundcloud so far – and there are, as you know, lots of mixes on Soundcloud. Jess sent me a message over to check some of her stuff out, and as you can see from the rather ace tracklisting its a skillful mix of funk, soul and northern with a touch of Jazz. Its the kind of thing most of us love, but don’t have the records (or the ability) to put together. These are all from original 7″, and for that, all I can do is doff my cap and ask that if you only download one mix from this site, let it be this one. Truly inspiring.

You can catch Jess playing around Liverpool from time to time at The Magnet, and you can hear this and other things up on her Soundcloud page.

Warsaw Rocks…

Rocking.

I was asked to go out to play in Poland by the Strictly Business crew (J-son and Funkoff – known to friends as Rafal and Jaromir) last weekend (28th November), and I just thought I would take a minute to reflect on a great trip, meeting cool, knowledgeable, talented and hospitable people at every turn.

The night was a success in that everyone who was there seemed to be having a great time. It wasnt without its technical problems to start with – I use Serato and we had a few issues for whatever reason, so in the end we made the decision to stop stressing, and get on with the night taking one deck each – me on the left hand side with Serato and the Strictly Business boys on the right playing from trusty old vinyl – a back to back. To say it worked well is an understatement.

As none of us knew what each other would do next, all your standard set build up was thrown out of the window. It was just bomb after bomb after bomb, and the crowd responded by climbing up on the stage, jumping, clapping, shouting, cheering….and of course, dancing (like mad). A truly great atmosphere.

I dont really think many words can do it justice though – you might want to take a look at the pictures:

Facebook Poland Pictures

Flickr Poland Pictures (slideshow)

I would like to thank Paweł Matwiejczuk and Krystian Maj for the great photos.

I promised that when I got back I would create a mix with all the tracks I played from the night, however, looking at the list its just so many big numbers it might not make pretty listening outside of a club at 3 a.m., so I decided to put together an hour mix of the kind of vibe we had, but more on a level thats easy to listen to now. You can download and stream it below (and there is also a tracklisting).

Id like to thank Piotr, Rafal, Jaromir and the people at Club Balsam for making a truly great trip, and I know that if you carry on doing what you are doing then this will all come good in Warsaw. It’s clearly ready for it…

Warsaw Rocks Tracklisting

Johnny Adams / Feel The Beat
Sharon Bailey / Cosmic Dust (Instrumental)
Trussel / I Love It (Waywards More Love Edit)
DFD / Go Ahead
Baja Imperi / Plastic Mode
The Younger Generation / We Rap More Mellow (Joey Negro Club Mix)
Joy / I Need Your Love
Out In The Sticks / Forget Me Vox

Cosmic Boogie #003 released…

Crown Heights Affair

The third Cosmic Boogie release has landed in record shops, brought to you by Greg Wilson and Ian Dewhirst respectively.

Side A: Time Moves On (Greg Wilson Edit)
Side AA: Dreaming a Dream (Ian Dewhirst Edit)

For their latest vinylicious edition, Cosmic Boogie sound a fanfare for two genuine legends of the groove – Greg Wilson and Ian Dewhirst. Greg you already know, but Ian might be unfamiliar despite a truly illustrious career. Mastercuts, the seminal series of dance compilations that Ian devised in the 90’s was only part of a veritable goldmine of hundreds of albums he has compiled down the years – check your sleevenotes, you’re bound to have some in your collection.

First appearing on 1994’s Crown Heights Affair ‘Deep Beats’ comp, ‘Dreaming A Dream’ is a vintage Dewhirst edit that ticks all the correct Disco boxes – the track being a Blackpool Mecca favourite back in ‘75, when Ian was known as DJ Frank on the Northern Soul scene. To compliment, Greg splices the esoteric ‘Time Moves On’ by Strutt (from ‘76), a hidden gem of a tune. Back to back, GW and ID – pure knowledge!

You can buy the track at the following places:

Picadilly: Buy / Listen at Piccadilly Records
Juno: Buy / Listen at Juno
Phonica: Buy / Listen at Phonica (made a reccomended release at Phonica)

And you can, if you so wish, listen to them both in full here:

MUSIC PLAYED IN DISCOTHEQUES

BY GREG WILSON FOR THE TATE LIVERPOOL 2009

When I was asked to contribute a playlist for the silent disco Wayne & Jack Hemingway have installed at Liverpool’s Tate Gallery I spent a bit of time soaking in the atmosphere of the room and running some possibilities through my mind. There was obviously the temptation to put together something more laid back / ambient, as this is what a gallery space would generally suggest, so the music doesn’t interfere too much with the visual experience. However, the whole point of the installation, as Jack pointed out, was to get away from the conventional, often stuffy approach that galleries can be accused of taking, alienating younger visitors as a consequence, so I quickly discarded that impulse and followed my heart rather than my head. Disco Deviance 11 – Cosmic Boogie

DD11a

Its been played quite alot over the summer, and now its finally out on the super Disco Deviance record label. Let the official blurb roll around your head…

The eleventh episode of Disco Deviance comes straight out of Liverpool in the UK from the emerging talent that is Cosmic Boogie. Starting out as a collective (inspired by local DJ legend Greg Wilson) based around the Cosmic Boogie website, which is dedicated to pushing groove-based music and knowledge about the scene, Cosmic Boogie has developed into a DJ persona and quality imprint in its own right.

For this release Cosmic Boogie edit, blend, overdub and effect some all time classic tracks into hot new versions that are ready to rock those disco dance floors. On the A side Electra’s seminal ‘Feels Good’ gets melted with Candi Staton’s accapella from ‘You Got The Love’ into a mesmerizing, hands-in-the-air anthem that unites two amazing originals into an ecstatic dance floor union.

Meanwhile on the flip side, Cosmic Boogie pays homage to one of his all time favourite artists on ‘Heads’ which reworks the original live version of ‘Slippery People’, extends it, subtley overdubs it and takes it to the limit.

Both tracks have been lovingly edited, wonderfully re-mastered and cut on hot vinyl at 45 RPM. And both tracks have been ripping up dance floors and festivals throughout the summer from Ibiza to Rockness to the Big Chill to Bestival, when played by Greg Wilson, Dicky Trisco and Cosmic Boogie himself.

You can check out the A side cut ‘Feels Good (You Got The Love)’ on the DD My Space player right now. And the other cut many of you will know already..but it sounds even better off the vinyl!!

DJ Play: Greg Wilson, Horse Meat Disco, Pete Herbert, Gerd Janson, Richard Sen, Crazy P, Situation, Dicky Trisco, Ross Allen

‘Two of the biggest floor fillers of the summer for me. Mick Boogie (to his friends) has come up trumps here, and this is surely destined to be one of the biggest double-D’s to date.’
Greg Wilson

‘BOTH TRACKS are superb!’
Horse Meat Disco

‘Big yes on DD011….Absolutely love the Feels Good, played it Friday in Momos and on sat in the Dam, and both times worked the business…’
Pete Herbert

‘Lovin and will be playing both! Ace!’
Gerd Janson

‘Thanks for this – very cheeky! The Electra track has never left my box and this edit is a sure shot party rocker – will be playing it to death.’
Richard Sen

‘Thank you for these gems. I love the Heads track.’
Danielle Moore (Crazy P)

‘Love both sides of the Cosmic Boogie release, heard Greg Wilson play both tracks at the big chill this yr and they rocked the crowd!’
Situation

‘Feels Good has been blowing people away on the dance floor all summer. Hands in the air disco. Top stuff.’
Dicky Trisco

‘These two are dope. Will play out tonight and on the radio in coming weeks.’
Ross Allen

Guest Mix #14 – Strictly Busine$$

Strictly Business

Strictly Buine$$ are J-son and Funkoff, a collective of Polish Dj’s who came together to (in their own words) “to awaken from stupor the Warsaw club scene, which, to this day was dominated by shallow sounds reproduced from suspicious devices.” A great reason to get up and do something, if you ask me. Here are the guys themselves with a few words about the guest mix they sent through to me:

“We decided to treat the issue literally and prepared a 100% boogie mix containing records only from 1981-85. We wanted it to sound rather funny and being something very enjoyable while listening then serious electronic music set (some of these records sound a bit cheesy nowadays and we are aware of that). The whole mix was prepared from original records, no bootlegs, re-edits etc. 100% vinyl. Also, the mix cover refers to ‘Star Wars fever’ from early 80s when everything had to look cosmic, even LP covers…”

This mix concentrates on a sound that’s not often covered on these pages – the more break-dance orientated boogie, and also contains loads of tracks I had never heard before (which is great). Nothing cheesy about it, just a different vibe to your deeper sets, but too much deepness can get a little boring.

There are plenty ways you can hear more from the Strictly Busine$$ lads – Myspace and Soundcloud being two of them, but for now, sit back and listen to them right here…

Cosmic Boogie October Selections

Another month, another step closer to Christmas, and another hour spent putting together the best bits I have bought from Juno this month. This is a download chart, I am about to do a big vinyl order so I’ll do a more traditional vinyl one when that’s gone through.

The stand out thing this month really (or stand out things) were the Linkwood album on Trusme’s label, and the Balihu compilation from Danny Wang. There also seems to be more and more edits released on download as well – including the excellent H-Track edits (which I felt including here would be cheating as I got them last year really). A great month though.

Guest Mix #13 – Simon Busby

Simon Jeremy

Simon Busby, a splendid chap from London whom I have recently been conversing with more and more often, sent this mix to me a month or so ago. Its a great mix of progressive disco, funky italo, super cool deepness and some extra added party. The only reason I haven’t uploaded it sooner for everyone is that sometimes, I really need to get my act together a bit quicker.

You can find Simon playing at his Glitterball parties in London (the next one of which is September the 19th), listen to some of his stuff on the Glitterball Soundcloud, and shout him via the exciting medium of email: simon@tigerknee.com. I really enjoyed this mix, its one Ive listened to alot over the past few weeks and its pretty much flawless. God bless you, Ron.

Cosmic Boogie #002 released…

Al Green

The second Cosmic Boogie release supplied by none other than Ashley Beedle hit all the good record shops at the weekend ans is steadily climbing up the charts.  The official blurb…

Side A: Railroad Man (Ashley Beedles Soul Train Edit)
Side AA: Everything is OK (Ashley Beedles Love Boogie Edit)

For the second in the Cosmic Boogie series we welcome on board legendary DJ and producer Ashley Beedle, and once again its time to fasten the seat-belts and continue the journey into the Funk stratosphere.

The mission begins with a fully spiritual re-working of Bill Wither’s classic ‘Railroad Man’, extended, tripped out, and guaranteed to transport you to another sonic dimension. Meanwhile on the flip side, the joyful boogie of Al Green’s ‘Everything is Ok’ is masterfully edited by Beedle into a slice of end-of-the-night euphoria which calls time on another successful journey for this exciting new imprint.

Re-mastered and cut loud for vinyl lovers, Cosmic Boogie is all about exploring a different meaning of ‘cosmic’. Long live the boogie! Continue Reading…

Cool in the Pool

shark

Cool in the Pool is a cool website. It says so in the title, and it backs it up in the content. I was lucky enough to do a mix for Cool in the Pool and an interview a few weeks ago, and, as Its been up for a little while I thought I would link to it from here. The mix was a more uptempo affair than usual, on purpouse. I try to play as many different things as i can (as many different things as I like), however, don’t expect a genre mish-mash of everything going just the usual groove based affair.

You can find the full mix and interview here. Thanks goes to Len for the opportunity.

Traktor…

YouTube Preview Image

I have decided to try out some of the other DJ systems besides Serato, just to see what’s what – and get a feel for what I like more. When I bought Serato a few years ago, I was told at the time that Traktor Pro was unstable and not the one to go for. Now, however, it seems things have changed. I bought myself one of these cheeky little soundcards (the advert I found on youtube is linked above), and a copy of the Traktor Pro software, and am going to give it a go and see what it gives me over Serato.

I play a lot of stuff from vinyl as well and need the ability to go back and forth between all the different formats, so I wont be able to get a good feel for the system until I have managed to try the vinyl control, but im interested to see what effects and things it gives me as I was intending to purchase a nifty little Kaoss Mini. Ill post up my findings and thoughts on the differences between the two systems when I have had some time to play.

Be nice to hear from anyone who might have used both Serato and Traktor and what the major differences are…

Guest Mix #12 – Tim Forrester

timforrestermix

Good things happen through music. Its a fact. A few weeks back (in fact a month ago now) I played at the rather amazing Beat Herder festival in darkest Lancashire. It didn’t rain the whole day until about 20 minutes before my set, and then it absolutely bollocked down. Whilst trying to take refuge on the stage, Id been listening to the three DJ’s who were on before me play a weird and wonderful mix of absolutely everything, including, as it happens, a good helping of disco.

One quick conversation later, and then an exchange of emails, and I got this great mix from Tim Forrester. Tim, like me, seems to have found disco through every other form of electronic music, and still has his fingers in many pies. You can hear more from Tim on his mixuplod profile (including many tasty drum & bass mixes). So, to nicely resurrect the guest mix section properly, I’d best hand it over…

Altiplano – Shaved Guevera!

Shaved Guevera!

As part of the new Altiplano night that recently came to Liverpool, Kelvin Andrews sent this mix over – Shaved Guevera! Its a brilliant eclectic mix, and rightly gives an insight into the wide range of music that is played. Indeed – if you were to try and pidgeon hole this mix, what would it be…hmm…electro-latin-balearic-indian-disco-percussive-funk-mental-calmness. Its really like nothing you hear very often…

Altiplano is, as I wrote about the last one, something new for Liverpool, and something welcomed with open arms. The next night (as you might see from the rather splendid flyer above) is August the 15th and will headline with Balearic Mike from Manchester. WIth Kelvin also on the decks, along with the very talented Chris Barker, its another step in the right direction. The night will be recorded and the sets from it will be hosted here in the future – as will all the Altiplano mixes. But, for now, please enjoy the shaved one…

(I have no tracklisting at the moment, but if I ever do, it will be added)
