Talking Heads – Slippery People
(Cosmic Boogies Handsome Bob edit)

talimgslippery

It’s hard work changing something you already love, into something you love even more. That’s about all I can say when it comes to this edit. If it were not for my father (the already referenced Handsome Bob), then I wouldn’t love Talking Heads, would not know how great a bongo can really be, and would today have no understanding of percussion, rhythm and downright genius. At least, that’s the way I see it. No version of the “live” Slippery People has ever existed in an extended format – so I thought I would do one, specifically with this weeks Beat Herder festival that I am playing in mind (so basically with added festival like powers).

I was never going to try and release this, so instead i thought id put it out for download to share. Comments are both welcome and appreciated.  You can download it from the Cosmic Boogie SoundCloud account:

Cosmic Boogie in iTunes, at last…

Apple

After trying to get the podcast feed accepted for about nine millenium’s, yesterday Cosmic Boogie was finally accepted into the Podcasts section on the iTunes store. I had been using plug-ins to try and create the feed for me but they were basically generating bollocks, so I decided to do it by hand. One week later – boom – in we go. The iTunes feed will basically cherry pick out the best mixes from the site and what not and add them in, and as each new mix is released it will automatically add to iTunes within 24 hours or so.

At the moment there are only a handful of mixes, but I will add to this over the coming days. I’m hopeful that its a way to get more people to hear the great mixes we have on here from guests around the country, and of course the Greg Wilson Renaissance mixes. Feel free to help spread the word.

I am playing this Friday at Cream in Liverpool as part of the Sasha and Digweed night. Archive was asked to represent itself in the Cream Annexe so I will be playing the first hour of disco and funk, etc. Ill keep the tempo up a bit I am sure, so as not to alienate people who clearly wont be there for disco strains – but I am looking forward to playing on the cream system none the less. Just in case Sasha and Digweed are your thing, here are all the details about the night:

Cosmic Boogie #001 Released…

The Undisputed Truth

So – the day has arrived. Well, to be honest it arrived a few days ago as the track has been available on most of the record shops since Wednesday…but officially, it comes out today. Its exciting times, and there are many people I need to thank for pushing me and helping me get this stuff out but I wont drone on here as they know who they are. Here is the “official” blurb about the release:

“New imprint Cosmic Boogie sets off its journey into slow motion space disco with two tasteful slices of interplanetary funk. First under the blade are The Undisputed Truth who are carefully dissected and reworked into the Cosmic Boogie 9000 Edit of ‘Space Machine’ which positively drips in atomic funk, futuristic boogie and space rock. Meanwhile over on the flip, the low slung groove and spaced out gospel soul of Charles Jackson’s ‘Ooh Child’ is extended to the max with the Cosmic Boogie Extend Yourself Edit. Respectfully edited, wonderfully re-mastered and cut loud at 45 RPM for vinyl lovers, Cosmic Boogie is all about exploring a different meaning of ‘cosmic’. Long live the boogie!” Continue Reading…

Liverpool Disco Mixes – Paul Outlar

Bobby Womack

The final day before the launch of the Cosmic Boogie vinyl (which has now surely been plugged enough) and I bring a good friend with impeccable music taste to the table. Paul runs the “where would Liverpool be without it” dance listing website Outlar, and is also semi resident at virtually every night in the city including Pigeon Hole Disco, Chibuku and anything else with a sound music policy. This is a brilliant mix, including a track from excellent upcoming Liverpool based producer Andy Ash, and the fabulously entitled “Big Hands for a Lady”. Indeed.

Liverpool Disco Mixes – Rich Furness

burial

The second in the series of Liverpool DJ disco mixes this week (celebrating the first ever Cosmic Boogie vinyl) comes from Jasbof promoter and Chibuku resident Rich Furness. Rich is, by all accounts, a music lover – everything from 80’s pop to the darkest dubstep and techno. After a few stints playing disco with me in a bar around Liverpool, he came up with this unique twist on Disco with many classics, and some really not so obvious surprises…

Cosmic Boogie May Selections…

I recently realised that I can add a rather sexy Juno chart to my site, which is awesome, as anything that saves me doing any hard work in making a nice meaty post can only be a good thing. So you will be getting one of these each month from now on. This is the May selection from Juno Download – particular favorites this month are the No Retribution EP on Tirk – just about as close to modern day electrofunk as I have heard, and the delightfully echoey Naomi Rap. Liverpool Disco Mixes – Gareth Cheshire

talkingheads1

This week sees the launch of the first ever Cosmic Boogie edit 12″, of which I am of course really excited about. I thought I would try and do something different for the launch other than just bang a post up here with all the blurb about the track and links to buy it, so I asked 4 friends in Liverpool to construct a mix for me based around disco in some way. The results are all great, and each day this week I will be putting one of the mixes up, culminating on a mix from myself on Friday to officially announce the launch.

I kick off with the first mix recieved a good few weeks back from Gareth Cheshire, Circus resident and perpetrator of the splendid Downstairs Mixup Podcast and a number of his own edits. A really nice modern take on the nu-disco italo influenced sound, with a few classic tweaks thrown in for good measure.

Out In The Sticks…

Out In The Sticks

If you haven’t already heard the excellent Out In The Sticks edits, then you really should. Most people would question what you could do to a track like Forget Me Not (apart from Will Smith clearly), but listen – and you shall see. I’m a big fan, Greg is a big fan, in fact everyone who has heard them is a fan. The other stuff I have heard that they are sitting on is also dancefloor killer. Out In The Sticks might be out of town, but they certainly aren’t out of touch (ooph!).

I got in contact with them a few weeks back, through the splendid Disco Deviance chaps, and have for your entertainment been sent back the answers to some questions, and a mix so unbelievably good it actually sounds like an hour and a half edit. Spot the joins if you can. Download or stream it with the links right after the interview. I’d like to thank the lads for taking the time out from going to the beach, sitting around playing pool, and looking at dangerous wildlife in their back gardens. Continue Reading…

ARCHIVE #005
FRIDAY 8TH MAY

MAURICE FULTON
DANIEL WANG
SCUZZ McBOOB

9 – 4 / £8

@ LEAF TEA SHOP AND BAR
25 PARLIAMENT STREET, LIVERPOOL

Archive 5 brings two disco pioneers to raise the roof off the tea shop. Maurice Fulton and Daniel Wang are both internationally respected and globally loved, each having their own take on dance music past and present.

Maurice Fulton is one of music’s true originals, an eccentric ex-pat American (currently living in Sheffield) DJ and producer who never fails to surprise and delight his listeners. He has recorded for DFA (under his Syclops guise), Tirk, 20:20…not to forget inspirational labels such as Strictly Rhythm and Warp Records.

Daniel Wang started his revered Balihu label in 1993 after years of dancing in NYC to disco classics and early house. He has since recorded for (amongst others) Environ, Ghostly International and Paper Recordings, bringing his take on the Italo disco sound of the early eighties. We welcome Danny the Dancer from his current home in Berlin.

All this will be ably supported by Scuzz McBoob (aka Scott McGill)

archive #004 / Greg Wilson / Chris Duckenfield

Greg / Chris / archive #004

After last months fantastic party with Optimo, this month were pulling out all the stops for an Easter all night party to remember.

Archive 4 is a double header of scientific proportions. The legendary Greg Wilson takes to the decks in his home city for the first time in years, fresh off the back of his huge BBC1 Essential Selection mix, which is being hailed as EM of the year already. For those that don’t already know who Greg is or what he is about, you can find out everything at www.electrofunkroots.co.uk.

Also, as its an all nighter we bring Chris Duckenfield (SWAG) from his home in Sheffield to party in Liverpool. Chris has earned a reputation for being one of the UK’s if not the world’s most versatile and interesting DJ’s. Equally at home playing House as he is Downtempo, Disco and classics.

Tickets are limited for the night, so get them as early as you can. There are also a number of cd’s placed in 3 beat and various other shops around Liverpool that have mixes from each of the DJ’s on the night, and are completely free. Happy Easter.

archive #003 / Optimo

archive #003 / Optimo

Archive is back and we have a great year ahead of us, starting with none other than Optimo the Scottish electronic duo responsible for the Optimo night in Glasgow (at the Sub Club), and for many a searing electro tinged edit and eclectic set.

Optimo started in 1997, though Twitch and Jonnie Wilkes had each been DJing separately for ten years. Both had started out playing different music – Twitch – electro, noisy rock and the eighties New York punk funk of Liquid Liquid (from who they borrowed their name) and Wilkes reggae, funk and jazz. Then techno came along and Twitch co founded Scotland’s first techno club, Pure, which ran for ten years, became legendary, was the first club in Europe to book Jeff Mills, Green Velvet and Richie Hawtin. The club also spawned thee labels which released music from amongst others Coil, Chris and Cosey, Jimi Tenor and Orlando Voorn.

In 1997 they founded the clubnight Optimo as a reaction to 4/4 techno all night long. Anything goes was the philosophy and the club night proved to be a hit. “I didn’t care whether it would work or not, or whether anyone would go, it was just something I had to do,” says Twitch. “I love DJing with all my heart but at this point I was so bored with seamless mixing – it was all just too obvious, too predictable and too easy – that I had to do something to preserve my (in)sanity.”

Don’t expect easy club hits at a night with Optimo, depending on the duo’s mood, the sound will veer from sleazy funk to post punk, electro, 50’s swing and anything inbetween.

Optimo will of course be backed up by myself and Scott McGill – the new resident on board for 2009. We have high hopes so if you need any more information / details, either continue reading or give me a shout on email.

Guest Mix 11 – Andrew Ingram

slabs of the tabernacle

I had a very good Christmas on the whole. Everything went smoothly, none more so than the night we put on with Trus’me on boxing night. The place was busy and a good time was had by all. Numerous good things came out of the night, and one of them is this very guest mix slot. Andrew Ingham is part of the crew that run the splendid looking Slabs of the Tabernacle night up in Scotland. At some random time in the morning, after I had finally twigged as to who he was – we had a conversation that stated we would make a mix for each others websites / nights, and that we would try to make it so that there was nothing obvious on it. I am., at the moment, still constructing mine (I have until the end of January to come up with the goods).Andy, however, is on the ball and has sent me this mix, which I therefore pass on to you.

I listened to it no less than 4 times yesterday. Its exactly what Cosmic Boogie is about – a melting pot of different genres of dance music, all with a certain angle. If you want to see more from the Slabs crew, check out the Slabs of the Tabernacle website. We will have Andy down for a night in Liverpool (and vice versa) at a future date.

Greg Wilson Essential Mix…

old-greg

It might be old news to some by now, but in the early hours of Saturday morning at the weekend just gone, Greg Wilson’s first ever Essential Mix was broadcasted out across the nation through BBC Radio 1. The mix has gone down an absolute storm, with rave reviews from all who have heard it, including me (of course). It has everything you could want from 2 hours of music, and my mere keyboard ramblings cant do it justice – but your ears can. You can find the mix still on the Essential Mix website for the rest of the week: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/essentialmix/, and failing that you can find it for download on a million websites. Im not linking to any of them, but just type Greg Wilson Essential Mix into Google, and hey presto, its all yours.

2009 – the year of the Wilson. Continue Reading…

Back for business…

Yes, its been a ghost town around here. Numerous reasons; Christmas, a new job, and the acquisition of a macbook which I had to learn how to use (and am typing this very post on right now). However, no longer will you be starved of a cosmic boogie fix – things are gearing back up now. So first of all I will say happy new year to everyone, I trust it all went as well as could be expected, and that 2009 goes just as swimmingly.

This year should see some great guest mixes, the continuation of the archive night in Liverpool, some more articles, some more mixes from myself, some more edits, some more tasty treats from Greg Wilson (who has his BBC Radio 1 essential mix going out live tomorrow night) and some all round general musical love.

Super.
